Krugman's swipe at Bloomberg's rhetoric about Occupy Wall Street.

Paul Krugman has a column about how various "plutocrats" are "panicking" about the Occupy Wall Street movement, and I want to focus on the 4th paragraph:
Michael Bloomberg, New York's mayor and a financial-industry titan in his own right, was a bit more moderate, but still accused the protesters of trying to "take the jobs away from people working in this city," a statement that bears no resemblance to the movement's actual goals.
So the "actual goals" — presumably, something along the lines of a better world for everyone — should divert us from noticing the actual effects people are actually causing? Imagine that as a general principle: We should to back off from criticizing people who have good intentions, even when they adopt means that cause collateral damage, even when those means aren't likely to get us to the pretty goals they have in mind.

These are exactly the people we need to expose and criticize!

Now, Bloomberg did kind of ask for it, because of his use of the word "trying":
"What [the protesters are] trying to do is take the jobs away from people working in this city... They're trying to take away the tax base we have because none of this is good for tourism....

"If the jobs they are trying to get rid of in this city — the people that work in finance, which is a big part of our economy — we're not going to have any money to pay our municipal employees or clean the blocks or anything else."
Bloomberg's rhetoric assigns to the protesters the intent to achieve the natural consequences of their actions. Obviously, this rhetoric invites the Krugman response. But I think it's a good rhetorical device. It rips away the vani [...]

So said David Byrne, explaining his song "Life During Wartime." I'm thinking about that song today because I'm reading Greg Mitchell's blog — OccupyUSA — in The Nation:

So... what kind of mood are you going for there, Greg? Creepy? Paranoid? Genuinely threatening violence? Or just stupid?

Now, "Life During Wartime" is a great song. I played it all the time back in the 1970s when it first came out. Like Greg Mitchell, I'm old. (I was born in 1951, and he was born in 1947.) Unlike Greg Mitchell, I can't imagine telling young people today to adopt one of the great old songs of my youth as their present-day music to protest by.

I like to think that young people today have built up plenty of resistance to the nostalgia of Baby Boomers. The Revolution Chic of my generation-mates is not cute and not cool. It's embarrassing and dumb.

Think for yourselves, people.

When a book falls into my hands, I open it up and read a sentence — and maybe that ends up being the only sentence I read.

Today's book just came in the mail. It's "The End of Straight Supremacy: Realizing Gay Liberation," by Shannon Gilreath. The sentence happened to be:
Feminists have persuasively shown the connection between sexualized violence, which, if we are being generous, might be the kind of "idea" First Amendment mucks are apparently concerned about (violence in the head), and real violence, inflicted through sex in the home or in the street, against women.
Mucks? I guess that's short for "high-muck-a-muck." Which means: poohbah.

And my response is: Pooh. Bah.

Part 1
Virat breaking things and tells BB the woman for which u've agreed toi become her servant due to this she insult me so much virat still talking teling she do so bad still pretend to be wow wat a good rajpurohitain and we cannot even tell her nything and outside Bh is at the door and listening to all this...at the same time BB teling virat to have patience BH is looking at her great envelope lol and then silently push the envelope at the doorstep wer BB n virat are looking at some files...As always BH having her overconfident look and go from there just then BB turns to do something and notice the envelope...Being so curious she opens the envelope to read and all and then Virat and BB are shocked about this letter and BB continues reading the letter...Both mom and son look at each other shockingly then continues to read it...
Scene shift to the main hall wer padma teling Dev go and rest just then BB cals Dev and tels him this is rad leter which i found in storeroom Bh feeling happy Dev opening the leter with great curiosity...Poor chipkali thking now Dev will break and as his wife i'll console him n bring him close to me...Padma tells dev to read wat's written...Dev start reading:

Dear Dev,
I know i've hurt u a lot but how can i stay without u for so long (Bharka is shown changing to shocking expresion lol) n BB also shocked wiv evryone else but rohan feeling happy.dev continue's thats y am coming back(u must see Bh face at that moment i burst out laughing) on 11th Oct at 8.00p.m i'lll return home(guys bh is shocked n shocked)

At 3:30 a.m. the next day, their Army battalion would roll out under the cover of darkness, concluding their mission to advise and train Iraqi security forces in Anbar province.

The swath of western Iraq the battalion was leaving behind has seen the bloodiest points of the war, but also some of the most promising. Since the war began, 1,332 U.S. troops have died in Anbar, nearly one in three of all U.S. fatalities. But not one has been killed in action in the province in more than two years.

Koyal walks inside the SB and is shocked to see CP dead. Raj approaches Koyal and says it's a good thing you came on time, Koyal. Go and pray to Auntie. Koyal obeys. Koyal then walks up to where Abha, Lata, and Shelly are standing and says as soon as I found out I took the first flight back. I can understand what you're going through. I'll pray that Auntie ji's soul rests in peace. Take care of yourself. The police comes and says Abha ji. The post mo tern report has arrived. This isn't a normal accident because by just being hit once no one can suffer this many injuries. The police goes on to say more to Abha and Karan. The police says someone purposely did this. Dev ji says she was such a nice person. Why would anyone want to kill her? The inspector says we'll only be able to find out about all of that after the investigation. Mr. Karan I can't say anything right now. Right now you all concentrate on her last rites and I'll continue the investigation. The inspector leaves. Raj says to Koyal you look very worried. Koyal says Tanvi is home alone so I was asking the maid if she gave Tanvi food to eat. Raj asks will your maid speak English? Koyal says yes. It wouldn't be appropriate to call right now, so I was smsing. The last rites are being carried out. Abha says I'll come too. Sheetal says Abha girls don't go. Abha says no matter what the rituals are if a woman can go after she's dead why can't she go when she's still alive? I will go. CP is lifted by the guys. A sad YMGGK song is played. Very emotional scene. All the girls stay behind in the SB except Abha. Koyal leaves. CP says to Mami you'll have to light a diya in name of CP. And in this situation it won't be wise to leave the house empty for many days. Mami says I'll go home and light a diya.

Koyal seems to be rummaging in Raghav's house for something.

Sulochana is in the bedroom packing her clothes to leave the house. Archana comes in the bedroom and asks her mother what she is doing. Sulochana angrily tells Archana that I am leaving from here. Archana says what did we do wrong aai that you have to leave the house? Sulochana says you guys are not doing wrong but you guys are committing a sin. Sulochana says and I don't want to be involved in this sin. Archana says aai, is it wrong to think about Varsha? Sulochana says why are just looking at it in one way, look the other way. Sulochana says what do you think, that all of the problems will finish after giving Soham away to Varsha? Sulochana asks if this will be for Sachu and Varsha's good? Sulochana says no, until Soham is small, he will not know who is his real mother, is it Varsha or you? Sulochana says when he becomes older and he realizes that Varsha is not his real mother but you are, than how will he be? Sulochana tells her daughter that when Soham realizes that his real parents are still alive and he was thinking that he had other parents, than what will he think? Sulochana asks Archana, when he questions you about this, what answer will you give him? Sulochana says you may answer him but will he believe you? Sulochana says I fear that when he gets older, he may not accept Varsha as his mother, than what? Sulochana asks Archana, if he starts hating you for what did you wrong, than what will happen? Sulochana says what situation will you be in, he will not trust his parents. Sulochana says he will hate his family. Sulochana says when someone loses their family, they start going on the wrong path and his life could be ruined. Sulochana asks her daughter if she can see Soham's life being ruined.

Preeto 11th October 2011 Written Update

Jassi takes Preeto shopping for fabric, and so that Preeto can see the latest designs and sew clothes for Dhruv's relatives herself. Neelam invites the girls for a party at her place, where she insults them indirectly. Preeto happens to overhear Neelam and Sasha (introduced as Dhruv's best friend and the one Neelam wanted as her daughter in law) discuss how downmarket Ishu is and how she'll never let the wedding happen.

The episode starts where it ended yesterday, with both Rajbeer and Preeto crying. Rajbeer comes and apologizes to Preeto right away, but she ignores him. After he leaves, she talks to God about how everything changes so fast - one moment you think everything will work out, and the next moment it feels like everything's finished. She worries about what to do next. She opens her eyes, and sees Jassi in front of her. Jassi tells her she came to give something to Jogi, but Dhruv told her Preeto was there too, so she came to meet her. Jassi asks her why she looks upset, and Preeto brushes it off, and changes the topic by asking her if she or any friend of hers need a tailor. Jassi says no, but ask her what the need is to work more then she already is? There's so much work pending, and probably lots of planning needed before Ishu's wedding. Preeto tells her that she needs more work for Ishu's wedding only. She explains the situation to Jassi, and Jassi tells her how she wish she could have done more for her. She only has 50 000 rupees, but knows that Preeto can make that into alot more money using her talent. She suggests Preeto to sew the clothes for the relatives herself! Preeto and Jassi plans to meet at the market to do the shopping the same day.

Two days in D.C. for the winners of the Google Science Fair

Last week, 17-year-old Shree Bose from Fort Worth, Texas, the grand prize winner of the Google Science Fair, visited Washington, D.C. at the invitation of the White House. We invited Shree to write about her experience in the capitol. - Ed.

Adrenaline. I turned around as the brilliantly polished door behind me opened, and suddenly I was face to face with a man I'd seen so many times on television. The President of the United States calmly extended his hand to shake mine and those of Naomi and Lauren, the other two winners of Google's first-ever Science Fair. He knew about our projects and was genuinely excited to talk with us.

The Oval Office is more than just a room. It has a palpable aura of grandeur, with the presidential seal in the center of the deep blue carpet and a portrait of George Washington hanging on the wall. The desk, where presidents of the past have contemplated some of the most important decisions in the world's history, was polished to a gleam. President Obama leaned against it as he talked to us.

He asked us how we became interested in science, what our plans were for the future and which colleges we were interested in. Smiling, he told us to stick with science. We left the Oval Office feeling like our individual futures were important to the nation's future; like we could change the world.

Our trip to Washington, D.C., also included visits to the National Institute of Health, the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Over our two days, we were given the opportunity to sit down and talk with many of our country's leaders who have not only bee [...]

Krkic: I won't go back to Barcelona

Roma striker Bojan Krkic insists that he would not return to Barcelona even if his former employers comes calling.

ST. MICHAELS, Ariz.—Navajo Nation Human Rights officials continue to monitor race related events and incidents in the City of Farmington and San Juan County including the Mayor's latest endeavor.

Mayor Tommy Roberts has begun an informal forum to promote discussion for "people of different racial and ethnic backgrounds who live and/or work in [Farmington]," called the "Minority Issues Roundtable." In talking with Bob Campbell, the assistant city manager for the City of Farmington, the roundtable was by invite only.

NNHRC was not invited since NNHRC does not live or work in the community of Farmington. NNHRC learned about the initiative from a Daily Times reporter, who wanted a response about the Mayor's initiative.

"Education and outreach are the most effective tools against intolerance and racism," said Leonard Gorman for the Navajo Nation Human Rights Commission. "Hopefully, Mayor Roberts will gain further understanding about how to address race relations by the invited participants."

Stakeholders and experts must come together in their field for win-win solution in race relations.

NNHRC recognizes "the majority of the people in the City do not tolerate racism," according to the Memorandum of Agreement between the Navajo Nation and City of Farmington, which was signed on November 17, 2010. Abhay sees Haseena trying to attack a girl in the mall, so he immediately goes and stops her and takes her into the trial room. Haseena is in shock. Abhay shakes her and asks what the matter with her is. She asks where they are and what are they doing there. Then she says that she is becoming restless. Abhay says that he will help her but for that she needs to go home with him. She says that Alinna has a potion that can cure her. Abhay says that he is with Alinna for that potion only and he will do everything for obtaining that potion. (Blahhh!!! He repeats his Shravan Kumar dialogues so often na?D'oh)

WASHINGTON — The Army's top general says plans to slash Pentagon spending by $450 billion will force the Army to consider cutting combat brigades.

He says that will mean the military won't be able to fight two conventional wars simultaneously — as it has done for the last decade.

Gen. Raymond Odierno, the Army's chief of staff, says officials are developing plans to cut spending, but are committed to ensuring the force is properly trained, staffed and equipped to defend the nation.
