50 More Years Of Russia - Georgian Disagreement

Russian Military To Stay In Abkhazia, South Ossetia, 49 More Years -- Eurasianet.org

Russia's Duma has passed, and President Dmitry Medvedev has ratified, an agreement allowing the Russian military to maintain bases in Abkhazia and South Ossetia for 49 years, with automatic 15-year extensions after that.

The agreements refer to the 7th Military Base in Abkhazia, and the 4th in South Ossetia, which have evolved from the peacekeeping bases that Russia maintained before the 2008 war with Georgia. (For a details about the bases, a thorough, if slightly old, accounting was published in Russia in Global Affairs.) The bases host a total of about 7,000 troops, split evenly between the two breakaway territories.

My Comment: I am sure Georgia has a different opinion on this deployment.

RVP sure of good times ahead

Robin van Persie has backed Arsenal to recover from their miserable start to the season and begin climbing the Premier League table.
Arsene Wenger's side endured a summer of turmoil with the departures of key midfielders Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri to Barcelona and Manchester City, respectively.
And they have struggled for form on the field, with just seven points garnered from their opening seven fixtures in the Premier League to sit 15th in the table.
An 8-2 drubbing at Manchester United was followed by an embarrassing 4-3 reverse at Blackburn and in their last outing the Gunners suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of local rivals Tottenham.

Drones Are The Future Of Air Power

Flight Of The Drones: Why The Future Of Air Power Belongs To Unmanned Systems -- The Economist

ON SEPTEMBER 30th Anwar al-Awlaki and several of his al-Qaeda colleagues stopped their pickup truck on a remote, dusty road deep inside Yemen's interior. He can have had only a split second to realise what was about to happen. But the missile strike that killed al-Qaeda's most effective propagandist was no real surprise. It was just the latest example of the way America's armed Predator and Reaper drones are changing the terms of combat with the country's enemies, leaving them able to run but with nowhere to hide.

Financial Polarization and Corruption: Obama’s Politics of Deception Don’t Let Him Get Away With It...

Global Research
Prof. Michael Hudson

The seeds for President Obama's demagogic press conference on Thursday were planted last summer when he assigned his right-wing Committee of 13 the role of resolving the obvious and inevitable Congressional budget standoff by forging an anti-labor policy that cuts Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, and uses the savings to bail out banks from even more loans that will go bad as a result of the IMF-style austerity program that Democrats and Republicans alike have agreed to back.

The problem facing Mr. Obama is obvious enough: How can he hold the support of moderates and independents (or as Fox News calls them, socialists and anti-capitalists), students and labor, minorities and others who campaigned so heavily for him in 2008? He has double-crossed them – smoothly, with a gentle smile and patronizing patter talk, but with an iron determination to hand federal monetary and tax policy over to his largest campaign contributors: Wall Street and assorted special interests – the Democratic Party's Rubinomics and Clintonomics core operators, plus smooth Bush Administration holdovers such as Tim Geithner, not to mention quasi-Cheney factotums in the Justice Department.

President Obama's solution has been to do what any political demagogue does: Come out with loud populist campaign speeches that have no chance of becoming the law of the land, while quietly giving his campaign co [...]

Ferdinand: Old Trafford a fortress

Defender Rio Ferdinand has set his sights on lifting a 20th league title with Manchester United after helping them turn Old Trafford into a "fortress".
United are top of the Premier League after going unbeaten in their opening seven games, while they have won all four home matches and scored 16 goals, conceding just three.
Ferdinand puts much of their early success down to their prowess on home turf and is confident Sir Alex Ferguson's men can retain the crown this term.
"There is such belief in the squad, we are gunning for title number 20," he told the Daily Star Sunday.
"We believe Old Trafford is a fortress and that is a great base for us to build on. T [...]

Critics On President Obama's Governing Style Are Making Their Opinions Known

Is President Obama a loner? REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque

Obama The Loner -- Chris Cillizza, Washington Post

The Post's Scott Wilson penned a provocative piece over the weekend that cast President Obama's current political problems through the lens of his loner tendencies.

Wrote Wilson:
This president endures with little joy the small talk and back-slapping of retail politics, rarely spends more than a few minutes on a rope line, refuses to coddle even his biggest donors. His relationship with Democrats on Capitol Hill is frosty, to be generous. Personal lobbying on behalf of legislation? He prefers to leave that to [...]

Awkward Anniversary: China Marks The Centenary Of The 1911 Revolution -- Time

In a country that claims five millennia of history, what's a mere century? Oct. 10 marks the 100th anniversary of the start of China's 1911 Xinhai Revolution, which ended 2,000 years of imperial rule. The fall of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) was precipitated by an uprising in the central Chinese city of Wuchang (now part of Wuhan) that eventually led to the formation of a Chinese republic under the tenuous leadership of Sun Yat-sen.

Where was Sheriff Dupnik?

The Examiner
William Heuisler

Last Friday, ten Arizona sheriffs, five Democrats and five Republicans representing most of Arizona's 15 counties, met in Phoenix to call Fast and Furious, the ATF/DOJ gun-walking operation, "a betrayal of state law enforcement." The Sheriffs called Attorney General Holder to account
Sheriff Clarence Dupnik of Pima County was not there.

Since Fast and Furious crossed and re-crossed Pima County, and because Sheriff Dupnik has not been shy with opinions in the past, many in Tucson were surprised at his notable absence from the spotlight.

Perhaps the Sheriff believes Attorney General Holder.

Eric Holder has promised a full investigation of the deadly gun smuggling by his Justice Department Inspector General. Maybe Sheriff Dupnik thinks a Justice Department IG investigation will be sufficient...and impartial.

Remember, the sheriffs were demanding President Obama appoint a special counsel to investigate Eric Holder and his possible authorization of Project Gunrunner and its Arizona offspring, Operation Fast and Furious.

Pinal County Sheriff, Babeu said, "We want to get to the bottom of this. One, to find out what tru [...]

Redknapp won't rule out Cahill bid

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has not ruled out making another attempt to take Bolton defender Gary Cahill to White Hart Lane in January.
Spurs failed to secure the England stopper's signature during the summer transfer window, with Trotters boss Owen Coyle revealing the only bids they received for the 25-year-old fell well short of their valuation.
But Redknapp has not given up his pursuit of Cahill, who is out of contract at the Reebok Stadium at the end of the season and could leave on a free transfer next summer.
He told the Sunday Mirror: "We were able to negot [...]

Acclaimed ghazal singer Jagjit Singh died on Monday in Mumbai. The 70-year old was admitted to Mumbai's Lilavati hospital after he suffered brain hemorrhage last month. He underwent two surgeries and was on life support.Mumbai, Oct 10 (IANS) Renowned singer Jagjit Singh, known as much for his ghazals and bhajans as for his work in Hindi cinema, died here Monday after a brain haemorrhage. He was 70.

Jagjit Singh had been in hospital for several weeks.Recipient of Padma Bhushan award, Jagjit Singh was the man behind making the ghazal genre available and understandable to all. Prior to Singh, ghazal singing was considered as an elite art, which was difficult for the common mass to understand due to high class Urdu and Persian.
