"Police Arrest About 400 Protesters on Brooklyn Bridge."

The NYT reports:

Things came to a head shortly after 4 p.m., as the 1,500 or so marchers reached the foot of the Brooklyn-bound car lanes of the bridge, just east of City Hall....

Where the entrance to the bridge narrowed their path, some marchers, including organizers, stuck to the generally agreed-upon route and headed up onto the wooden walkway....

But about 20 others headed for the Brooklyn-bound roadway, said Christopher T. Dunn of the New York Civil Liberties Union, who accompanied the march. Some of them chanted "take the bridge." They were met by a handful of high-level police supervisors, who blocked the way and announced repeatedly through bullhorns that the marchers were blocking the roadway and that if they continued to do so, they would be subject to arrest.

There were no physical barriers, though, and at one point, the marchers began walking up the roadway with the police commanders in front of them – seeming, from a distance, as if they were leading the way....

Now, there's a controversy about arresting the people who were further back. To some of them, it seems, it looked like they were being given permission to march on the bridge roadway, and then the police captured the whole group with orange nets. Or so the protest folk say. Source - Althouse

Groton, Conn. • The Navy is considering lengthening the standard deployment of attack submarines beyond six months as it faces rising demands with a fleet that has been shrinking since the end of the Cold War, the commander of American submarine forces told The Associated Press in an interview.

Already, attack submarines are at times asked to stay out longer than six months — extensions that can be trying for sailors who serve in tightly confined spaces with limited outside communication as members of the "silent service."

US Congress blocks £128m in aid for Palestinians

Palestinian Authority accuses Congress of holding back aid to punish Mahmoud Abbas' bid for UN statehood

The Palestinian Authority has accused the US of "collective punishment", after the US Congress blocked $200m (£128m) in aid in response to President Mahmoud Abbas' bid for UN statehood.
The decision to freeze the payments was reportedly made by three congressional committees on 18 August, before Abbas' planned bid for statehood recognition at the UN the following month.

The funds, intended for food aid, health care, and infrastructure projects, were supposed to have been transferred within the US financial year, which ends today. The Obama administration is reportedly negotiating with congressional leaders to unlock the aid.

"It is another kind of collective punishment which is going to harm the needs of the public without making any positive contribution," Palestinian Authority spokesman Ghassan Khatib told the Independent.

TV9 - Anna Hazare visited Rajghat to pay respects to Mahatma Gandhi ahead of his protest fast at Ramlila Maidan..........! NEW DELHI: Anna Hazare visited Rajghat to pay respects to Mahatma Gandhi ahead of his protest fast at Ramlila Maidan. Escorted by police and accompanied by a large number of people, Hazare reached the memorial from the back entrance at around 1:45 pm and remained there for about 20 minutes. He came to Rajghat straight from Tihar Jail where he spent the past over 67 hours fasting. The 73-year-old anti-corruption crusader bowed before the memorial after removing his Gandhi cap and shawl and paid floral tributes. He did not go to India Gate as announced earlier. Supporters of Hazare were seen carrying the tri-colour on long wooden poles and aluminium rods as they entered Rajghat. Delhi Police personnel deployed at Rajghat were seen asking the crowd gathered at the spot to take out the 'sticks' on which they were carrying the national flag. "A senior police official has asked us to ensure big, long sticks are not taken inside the Rajghat. They are not allowed inside this premise," a police official said. The supporters, however, happily agreed to the police directive and carried the flags in their hands. The police personnel even did not allow small pieces of wood on which slogans were written. Dussehra Festival presented by Scottish Indian Cultural & Festival Committee, the Hindu temple Glasgow and Jesters' Knot. This the second of two presentations of photographs gives a glimpse into the procession and into the events in Kelvingrove Park, Glasgow on 10th October 2009. There were a spectacular array of performances that thrilled the crowd before an effigy of Ravana was set alight and fireworks were let loose. The whole day was a bright vibrant celebration to mark Dussehra.
