Sunday 9 October 2011

The Occupy Madison protest took to the Capitol rotunda today.

I counted 56 or 57 participants — including children — arriving on the Capitol Square at noon. They marched half a block to the law enforcement monument, where they ambled around chanting "We are the 99%." Then a man started a chant that's very familiar from last winter's protests: "Whose house?"/"Our house!" And the group filed up to the Capitol and reassembled in the rotunda for some more chanting and speechmaking.

One of the chants in the rotunda was "How do we fix the deficit?"/"Tax! Tax! Tax the rich!" And I love the hanging banner: "All shared sacrifice is equal, but some must share the sacrifice more than others." It's an allusion to to George Orwell's "All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others." You're not really supposed to be proud of sounding Orwellian... but there you have it.

I have video, which I'll put up soon, as well as more photographs. Generally, I'd say that Occupy Madison was a small affair. And yet they're claiming to represent 99% of Americans.

It reminded me a bit of the Silent Majority Walk last June. Those folks got quite a few catcalls about the disparity between their name and their number. Of course, the Silent Majority Walk consisted of conservatives, and the Occupy Madison people give off a strongly left-wing vibe. But I keep thinking there's a bridge between these groups. [...]

Carragher tipped to manage Liverpool

Liverpool legend Tommy Smith believes current club icon Jamie Carragher has all the qualities necessary to manager the Reds in the future.
Carragher only recently admitted his career may soon be coming to a close, and has made no secret of his desire to enter coaching when he eventually retires.
Already, the 33-year-old centre-back is in the process of earning his UEFA B licence, and Smith is confident Carragher will be a top manager regardless of who he takes charge of.
"It was interesting to hear Jamie Carragher on his plans when he eventually hangs up his boots," Smith said on Liverpool's official website. "And no surprise to know that he wants to stay in the game and get into management.

Nothing romantic about a candle-light newscast

Loadshedding, power cuts, outages, 2-phase supply etc are near-permanent words in the lexicons of news organisations in a country where electricity shortage is an everyday occurence.

So how can the media bring some life to such a routine news story?

In Karnataka, where scheduled loadshedding will be in force from today, Suvarna News, the 24×7 Kannada news channel owned by the member of Parliament Rajeev Chandrasekhar, took an unusual step on Sunday.

All day, from 6 am to 11 pm, anchors sat in suitably darkened studios and read out the news with a candle on top of their desks to convey the impact the loadshedding was going to have on viewers.

According to the channel’s editor-in-chief Vishweshwar Bhat, the candle was used as a symbol of the looming power crisis; not as if there was no electricity in the channel’s studios.

Hopefully, the channel’s viewers had electricity back home to see the candle-light bulletins.

Kannada Prabha, the daily owned by Rajeev Chandrasekhar and edited by Bhat, followed up on Monday with an all-black front page with a candle as the lead image.

It was a beautiful day in the free city of Madison.

But some earnest folk were determined to do something worthy of the name of their movement: Occupy Madison:

Really, that's a little grim and sad for a lovely day like this. Outside, we see lots of children. I've never seen so many children downtown. We stop inside the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art to check out the Chicago Imagists. I love that kind of art, but then we heard multiple sirens, so we ducked out into the stairway to see what was going on.

No, the protests hadn't gone haywire. It was a parade of fire engines. And that explained why all the kids were downtown.

Tevez returns to face City verdict

Carlos Tevez will return to Manchester City on Wednesday to find out what punishment awaits him for allegedly refusing to play against Bayern Munich.
According to reports in the Daily Mail, the Citizens will have the outcome of the investigation towards his actions in their Champions League clash against Bayern ready by then, and it is likely that the Argentine will not be welcomed back into their first team, though the striker will be expected to remain match-fit, nonetheless.
The club's owners are in a quandary whether to cancel his contract and let him go, or hold out for a bargain transfer deal during the January window.
However, further reports indicate that the City hierarchy is worried that interested clubs may be put off by a high valuation of t [...]

Wenger: Gourcuff injury scared me off

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitted he had an interest in Lyon's midfielder, Yoann Gourcuff, during the summer transfer window.
According to reports in the Sun, the Frenchman was close to making a £20 million bid for his compatriot, but was frightened off by revelations that the 25-year-old midfielder needed a knee operation.
Wenger revealed: "I was interested. Then I learned of his medical condition."
However, this will not be the end of Arsenal's interest in the France midfielder, as further reports indicate that the Arsenal manager is still considering another bid in January for Gourcuff.
The Frenchman was just one of the players chased by the Gunner [...]

Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has admitted that the Catalans will have to do their best to keep Pep Guardiola at the club.
Speaking to La Repubblica, Rosell had admitted that the reigning La Liga champions were not keen to lose "the best coach" in Barcelona's history.
The 41-year-old tactician had recently admitted he was not keen to tie himself down to a long contract with Barcelona, and reports in Italy had suggested that Inter Milan owner Massimo Moratti is considering a bid to bring Guardiola to Italy next season.

CIA's Vaccine Ruse In Pakistan Carries Fallout -- L.A. Times

The phony campaign was aimed at helping find and kill Osama bin Laden, but the doctor involved now faces treason charges, and real immunization workers say Pakistanis don't trust them.

Reporting from Islamabad, Pakistan — A phony vaccination campaign orchestrated by the CIA to help find and kill Osama bin Laden is undercutting Western-backed immunization drives against polio and other diseases, and now has the Pakistani doctor involved in the program possibly facing treason charges.

A Pakistani government commission investigating the U.S. raid that killed Bin Laden in May recommended late Thursday that treason charges be filed against Dr. Shakeel Afridi, who helped carry out the fake vaccination effort designed to obtain DNA evidence from the Al Qaeda leader's sprawling compound in Abbottabad.
