Prandelli expects no Italy let-ups

Italy may have already secured their place at Euro 2012 but coach Cesare Prandelli is demanding no let-up from his side in their final two qualifiers.
The Azzurri are guaranteed to finish top of Group C as they boast an eight-point lead over nearest challengers Serbia, who they face in their penultimate qualifier in Belgrade on Friday before then completing their campaign four days later against Northern Ireland in Pescara.
With a finals berth already secured Prandelli could have decided to experiment in Italy's last two group games, but the former Roma and Fiorentina boss is looking for continuity and for his team to keep their winning run going.
"We have two official games and I want them to be played in the best possible way," said Prandelli, whose s [...]

Is Technology Feeding Mind-Boggling Volatility Everywhere?

World On Wi-Fire -- Niall Ferguson, Daily Beast/Newsweek

Feel the chaos? Technology is feeding mind-boggling volatility everywhere.

The human race is interconnected as never before. Is that a good thing? Ask the Lords of the Internet—the men running the companies Eric Schmidt of Google recently called "the Four Horsemen": Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google—and you'll get an unequivocal "yes." But is it true? In view of the extraordinary economic and political instability of recent months, it's worth asking if the Netlords are the Four Horsemen of a new kind of information apocalypse.

My Comment:

UWA backs away from climate change debate

FarmWeekly
Travis King

Bill Crabtree said predictions of a four degree celsius
temperature increase and a reduction of 70mm rainfall for the
WA agricultural region needed to be tested.
AGRICULTURAL consultants have expressed disappointment at the University of Western Australia's (UWA) attitude towards a planned debate on global warming.

After hearing predictions of the impact that global warming could have on WA farming, Bill Crabtree and David Falconer approached UWA to hold a debate representing both sides of the global warming argument.

They said after getting the initial go-ahead from UWA's vice-chancellor Alan Robson they were told that no speakers could be found for the pro-global warming side and that the speakers the pair had organised to speak against global warming were not credible enough to speak at a debate on UWA grounds.

Mr Crabtree said the speakers that had been approached to question the degree of climate change were credible and included mathematician and engineer David Evans, who between 1999 to 2005 worked full-time for the Australian Greenhouse Office (now the Department of Climate Change) modelling Australi [...]

Swansea 2-0 Stoke City

Record signing Danny Graham grabbed his first Swansea goal as the Welsh club maintained their unbeaten home record with victory over Stoke in a feisty Liberty Stadium encounter.
Scott Sinclair opened the scoring when he slotted his second penalty of the campaign in the 10th minute after Potters' captain Ryan Shawcross, on his 100th top-flight appearance, had made a rash challenge on Wayne Routledge.
Graham then made sure of the win with five minutes remaining as he came out on top in a challenge with Jonathan Woodgate to calmly fire home his maiden strike following a £3.5million move from Watford.
Glenn Whelan went closest for the visitors as he hit the post with a low free-kick, while Jon Walters had a volley athletically tipped onto the crossbar by M [...]

No U.S. Military Hotline To Iran

Iran Rejects Proposed U.S. Military Hot Line -- Wall Street Journal

WASHINGTON— Iranian military leaders have rebuffed a plan championed by senior Obama administration officials to establish a military-to-military hot line between Washington and Tehran, increasing U.S. fears about the potential for clashes between American and Iranian planes and ships operating in the oil-rich Persian Gulf.

The snubbing of the U.S. idea by Iranian naval and Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps commanders also appears to further undercut the political position of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Sporting Gijon 0-1 Barcelona

Barcelona climbed to the top of La Liga after scraping a 1-0 win over bottom club Sporting Gijon to pick up their first away league win of the season.
Pep Guardiola's side had drawn 2-2 at both Real Sociedad and Valencia in their previous two away matches in La Liga but they returned from Asturias with all three points thanks to Adriano's solitary early strike.
Barca are now level on 14 points with surprise package Levante at the summit, while Sporting continue to struggle at the foot of the standings after suffering their fifth defeat in six games.
Barca had netted 22 times in their opening five league games and also thrashed BATE Borisov 5-0 away from home in the Champions League in midweek, but the European and Spanish champions found it tough to cre [...]

Was East Germany For Sale?

Photo: Ludwig Erhard

West Germany Wanted To Buy The East From USSR -- The Telegraph

The West German government considered buying East Germany from the Soviet Union in the 1960s, declassified documents have revealed.

The American files show that chancellor Ludwig Erhard, despite being credited as one of the men behind West Germany's post-war economic miracle, was prepared to hand over a huge sum of money to Moscow for the prize of reunification.

A document seen by the German news magazine Der Spiegel records a conversation between a German government official and George McGhee, the US ambassador to Bonn, in October 1963. The American was told Germany was prepared to pay over $2 billion a year for a decade to Moscow in return for East Germany: a sum which then amounted to about a quarter of West Germany's GDP.

US President Barack Obama has suggested that Europe should expand economic stimulus. REUTERS

America's Debt Crisis: Why Europe Is Right and Obama Is Wrong -- Michael Sauga, Spiegel Online

US President Barack Obama has recently suggested that Europe must take on more debt to stimulate the economy. Such reliance on cheap money, though, is what got us into the current crisis in the first place -- both in Europe and in the US. America's problem isn't too little money. It's a lack of competitive products.

"The Broken Jug" is one of the most frequently performed plays in German theater. With the village judge Adam, who passes judgment on a crime he committed himself, Heinrich von Kleist created one of the classic comedic figures of world literature.
