Sailors Will not face Discipline For Near Disaster On Carrier Flight Deck

Sailors Won't Face Discipline For Close Call With Fighter Jet, Navy Says -- Stars And Stripes

YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan — A descending Navy fighter jet's close encounter with two sailors on the USS George Washington's flight deck did not result in disciplinary action, but a video of the incident is being used for safety training throughout the Navy, officials said Friday.

The 11-second video, which was captured by a ship camera Sept. 25 and later uploaded privately to YouTube, shows two sailors walking on to the flight deck while an F/A-18 Super Hornet was clearly approaching.

The YouTube clip has since received nearly 100,000 hits, most of which came during the past 24 hours.

12 Somalis killed in US drone attack

PressTV

At least twelve people have been killed and several others injured in a US drone attack in southern Somalia near the border with Kenya, Press TV reports.

On Saturday, the US military used a remote-controlled unmanned aerial vehicle in an attack on Afmadow city that left twelve civilians dead and 23 more injured.

Afmadow city is located in the middle of the Juba region, 620 kilometers (385 miles) south of the Somali capital Mogadishu.

A Somali military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Press TV that the strike sought to target an al-Shabab base in the area, but the casualties were all civilians.

Earlier in the day, 16 civilians were killed and 50 others wounded in another US aerial attack on Afmadow city.

In the wake of the US drone attacks, thousands of local residents are leaving Afmadow city, fleeing for their lives.

Somalia is the sixth country where the United States has used remote-controlled drone aircraft to launch deadly missile strikes.

The US military has also used drones in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya, Iraq, and Yemen.

Somalia has not had a functioning government since 1991, when warlords overthrew former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.

De Rossi to snub Man City, Chelsea

Roma star Daniele De Rossi admitted he is keen to stay in Italy, and reject the overtures of Manchester City and Chelsea.
The midfielder is in high demand, with both Barclays Premier League big-spenders keen to snap him up, as the Italian's contract renewal talks seem to have hit a snag.
City manager Roberto Mancini in particular, is a big fan of his compatriot, while Andre Villas-Boas is also keen to add him to Chelsea's star studded midfield at Stamford Bridge.
With De Rossi's contract expiring next summer, he certainly represents value for money, as he could either walk on a free transfer or go for a hugely discounted fee this January.
The Citizens, according to reports from talkSPORT, are considering a £8 million move for the Italy international in a bid to gazump their rivals.
With the midfielder's future at Roma in doubt, the Serie A club could consider that an attractive deal, but De Rossi himself is keen to stay.
De Rossi, who has been at Roma all his career, admitted: "Everything is at an impasse.

Guardiola wants freedom with Barca

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola says he does not want to be tied down on a long-term contract because he needs to feel free to decide his future.
The 40-year-old was promoted from Barcelona's B team in June 2008 to replace Frank Rijkaard at the helm of the senior side.
Since then Guardiola has extended his contract with the reigning Spanish and European champions on a year-by-year basis, with his current deal due to expire next June.
The coach told Catalan sports daily Sport: "Listen, every day I think that tomorrow I am leaving.
"When you manage something, you have to always think that tomorrow you could go.

Vladimir Putin Hosts 59th Birthday Bash For Himself -- The Telegraph

Vladimir Putin turned 59 on Friday holding a party for himself at one of his luxurious Moscow residences with his old friends Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.

Mr Putin is currently Russia's prime minister but is set to controversially return to the Russian presidency next May for a third time after an election he is expected to easily win in March.

The former KGB spy is entitled to serve two six year back-to-back terms which would keep him in power until 2024 at which point he would be 71.

Mr Putin's supporters were out in force on Friday. A group of young girls calling themselves 'Putin's Army' released a video of themselves baking him a birthday cake in a state of semi-undress, while another group of fans calling [...]
