Arsene Wenger admits Arsenal cannot be regarded as title contenders after falling 12 points behind leaders Manchester United following their 2-1 defeat at north London rivals Tottenham on Sunday. Wenger endured another frustrating day as his side crashed to their fourth loss in seven league games at White Hart Lane. The Gunners' disappointment was compounded by a potentially serious injury to Bacary Sagna who was taken to hospital with an ankle problem that was later diagnosed as a broken leg. Arsenal's dismal start to the season mean they sit just two points above the bottom three and Wenger accepts it is unrealistic to consider his side to be likely challengers for the championship while they are in their current plight. "I think at the moment we have to set realistic targets like to say today we want to get in the Champions League positions," Wenger said.

There are few more polarising figures in Indian journalism than Arun Shourie.
For many of his professional peers, he is everything a journalist should not be: a wonky-eyed, hired gun of the Hindu right, selectively and deviously using facts to push its ideological and political agendas.
Arrogant, intolerant, abusive, dictatorial, .
For multitudes more, he is the proverbial Sancho Panza, tilting at the windmills of political correctness, shining light on the dark corners of Indian political and business life, with his exposes and editorials.
Saying it like it is, without fear or favour.
In his just released memoirs, Ink in my Veins, the veteran editor Surendra Nihal Singh, who was Shourie’s boss at the Indian Express, dismisses Shourie as a pamphleteer who thought “a newspaper was a stepping stone to politics and political office… and used journalism to achieve his political ambitions.”
***
By S. NIHAL SINGH
My experience with Arun Shourie was not happy.
To begin with, he had got used to doing pretty much what he wanted because S. Mulgaonkar [who Nihal Singh replaced as Express editor at his recommendation] had been ailing for long and usually made only a brief morning appearance to do an edit if he felt like it.
To have to work with a hands-on editor who oversaw the news and editorial sections was an irksome burden for Shourie.
Our objectives collided.
My efforts were directed to making the Express a better paper, while he was bas [...]

The Philosophical Gourmet Report is a ranking of philosophy departments in the English-speaking world, and is edited by the Philosophy and Law professor Brian Leiter. Following are some of the top ranked philosophy departments in the US: The University of Chicago - The Philosophical Gourmet Report ranked Chicago Philosophy Department 1st in the field of continental philosophy. Author Brian
"We don't believe in a small America. We believe in a big America ---- a tolerant America, a just America, an equal America -- that values the service of every patriot. We believe in an America where we're all in it together, and we see the good in one another, and we live up to a creed that is as old as our founding: E pluribus unum. Out of many, one. And that includes everybody. That's what we believe. That's what we're going to be fighting for."
I wonder if this high level of abstraction is going to work for him a second time. He is more specific in the previous paragraph, saying something that is hard to grasp — that the Republican candidates don't support the men and women in the military — unless you combine it with the meme that, at the last debate, they condoned or tolerated the booing of a gay soldier:
We don't believe in standing silent when that happens. We don't believe in them being silent since. You want to be Commander-in-Chief? You can start by standing up for the men and women who wear the uniform of the United States, even when it's not politically convenient.
The meme is false, as explained here. There is a contagious lie and the President — he who often speaks of transcending divisiveness — is enthusiastically spreading it... while — ironically! — posing in the mantle of oneness, E pluribus unum. The crowd goes wild, by the way. Listen to the audio (at the link). They find the infected red meat scrumptious! And can you blame the poor man? He must serve something to the assembled hungry masses, and this — this! — is the best he's got.

Cheap And Slick Drones Signal Strategic Shift -- Sydney Morning Herald
WASHINGTON: The CIA drone strike that killed Anwar al-Awlaki, the US-born propagandist for al-Qaeda's rising franchise in Yemen, was one more demonstration of what US officials say is a cheap, safe and precise tool to eliminate enemies. It was also a sign that the decade-old US campaign against terrorism has reached a turning point.
Disillusioned by the huge costs and uncertain outcomes in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Obama administration has decisively embraced the drone, along with small-scale lightning raids such as the one that killed Osama bin Laden in May, as the future of the fight against terrorist networks. Many names, including top international ones, were considered for the coveted role of the screen queen opposite bad-boy Aamir Khan in Dhoom 3.
Finally it's Katrina Kaif, after all, who has bagged the prized part.
Katrina, it must be remembered, was Yashraj, Aditya Chopra and director Vijay Krishna Acharya's first choice for the part.
But the actress, hellbent on building on her wholesome image, had major misgivings about some of the things that the role required from her. There was the mandatory girl-in-a-bikini Dhoom shot.
With her new policy of no kissing and no exposure Katrina begged off the role.
Says a very reliable source, "Katrina very clearly told her dear friend Aditya Chopra that she would not be comfortable doing some of the scenes.
Aditya told her she was crazy to turn down the chance of playing the Dhoom girl, and that too opposite Aamir Khan but Katrina is very clear about what she wants and doesn't want to do on screen.
And nothing could make her change her that. She suggested they look for someone else. "
The hunt for Aamir's Dhoom girl even went international with hot global faces being considered [...]

Yemen Troops Die After Zinjibar 'Friendly Fire Bombing' -- BBC
About 30 soldiers have been killed after an air strike by Yemeni warplanes in the south of the country, local officials and medics said, though the government has denied the reports.
The bombing on Saturday evening hit 119th brigade troops near Zinjibar in restive Abyan province and was followed by attacks by militants, reports say.
It is unclear how many died in the actual bombing, or if it was an error.
However, Yemeni TV said no such air strike had taken place.

Don't try to drag it out of me. I am not in this conspiracy, but I don't want to blow the lid off of it. The Arctic ozone hole lay over over populated regions for parts of winter and spring
Ozone destruction takes place within polar stratospheric clouds, with chlorine the main culprit
Ozone loss over the Arctic this year was so severe that for the first time it could be called an "ozone hole" like the Antarctic one, scientists report.
About 20km (13 miles) above the ground, 80% of the ozone was lost, they say. The cause was an unusually long spell of cold weather at altitude. In cold conditions, the chlorine chemicals that destroy ozone are at their most active.
It is currently impossible to predict if such losses will occur again, the team writes in the journal Nature.
Early data on the scale of Arctic ozone destruction were released in April, but the Nature paper is the first that has fully analysed the data.
Raul Garcia and Tomer Hemed both scored twice as Osasuna and 10-man Real Mallorca shared the points in an entertaining encounter at the Reyno de Navarra stadium.
Hemed scored his first-ever goal for the visitors from a penalty on 34 minutes after Miguel Flano had felled the Israeli just inside the area.
Garcia then headed the hosts level in first-half injury-time when he was left unmarked inside the six-yard box from Alvaro Cejudo's corner and he repeated the trick 15 minutes into the second period as he again met a Cejudo corner to flick a header past Dudu Aouate.
Mallorca were reduced to 10 men in the 72nd minute as Emilio Nsue was shown a straight red card for kicking out at Roland Lamah, but they were given a second penalty only minutes later as Lam [...]

Def. Sec. Panetta: Israel Risks Isolation -- CBS News
(AP) ON BOARD A MILITARY AIRCRAFT - Defense Secretary Leon Panetta warned Sunday that Israel is becoming increasingly isolated in the Middle East, and said Israeli leaders must restart negotiations with the Palestinians and work to restore relations with Egypt and Turkey.
In a blunt assessment made as he was traveling to Israel, Panetta said the ongoing upheaval in the Middle East makes it critical for the Israelis to find ways to communicate with other nations in the region in order to have stability.

Valencia got back to winning ways but failed to kill off Granada as their goalscoring troubles surfaced once more.
Sergio Canales' fine early goal was sufficient to seal victory, though forwards Roberto Soldado and Jonas Goncalves wasted a hatful of chances to extend the lead.
And they should have been made to pay by Carlos Martins late on, while Inigo Lopez hit the bar as Granada improved in the second period.
Little more than three minutes were on the clock before Canales gave the home side the lead, firing home low left-footed from 25 yards after being teed up by Pablo Piatti.
Soldado went close to a second when Canales took a short corner and crossed fo [...]

Adrian scored Racing Santander's first goal since the opening weekend of La Liga to claim a 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano.
The former Getafe midfielder was brought on at half-time to replace Alexandros Tziolis and made almost an immediate impact as he slid in to divert Oscar Serrano's cross into the net.
Rayo had taken the lead in the first-half through Raul Tamudo, who took advantage of a slip by Bernardo in the home defence to run through and cleverly lob Tono Ramirez from a narrow angle.
Both sides had chances to win the match but Michu's header came back off the bar for the visitors and Adrian should have won it in the final minute - but he shot straight at Dani Gimenez.

Hollywood actress Camilla Belle might be just one film old in Bollywood, but she is madly in love with the industry and is keen to do typical song-dance masala Hindi movies.
The 24-year-old, who featured in Hollywood movies "The Lost World: Jurassic Park", "When a Stranger Calls" and "10, 000 BC", made her Indian debut with Akshay Kumar's co-production "Speedy Singhs".
"If I am offered a film here, I would grab the opportunity. I am completely open to it, I don't limit myself. I don't close my mind to anything. I love the way films are made here. I am so fond of song-dance sequences. There (west) it is not so colourful and rich like here in India, " Camilla told in an interview while promoting the film in the capital.
"I got an opportunity to try 'jhatka-matka' of Bollywood and I must say it was so much fun. I took Bollywood dance class in Los Angeles, it has become very popular there. I haven't danced in my whole life because we don't have these song and dance sequences there. But honestly, one can say I am infected by this Bollywood fever now, it's all over my mind, " she added.
Though she is fascinated with Bollywood, she knows little about it.
"I want to see more of Bollywood films now. I want to learn the format that is followed here that is why I am taking back a lot of DVDs of various Hindi films, " said the Los Angeles-based actress
Talking about her favourites in Bollywood, she said: "I know Aishwarya as I met her at the Cannes and she has been there [...]

This was, I keep reading, Thomas Jefferson's favorite apple, but the Monticello Explorer says:
'Esopus Spitzenburg' was one of Thomas Jefferson's two favorite Apple varieties, the other being 'Albemarle Pippin.' He planted thirty-two of these trees in the South Orchard at Monticello between 1807 and 1812. A.J. Downing, America's foremost nineteenth-century pomologist, described 'Esopus Spitzenburg' as "a handsome, truly delicious apple...unsurpassed as a dessert fruit...considered the first of apples." Today, Apple connoisseurs still consider this variety among the finest ever known. It bears handsome red apples, ripening in late autumn, with firm, juicy yellow flesh. The apples have a delicious, brisk, rich flavor that is unforgettable.
The peculiarities of his varieties both vex and intrigue [Stephen Wood, the owner of Poverty Lane Orchards here, who planted 20 acres high-flavored "uncommon apples"]. His favorite — it was also Thomas Jefferson's — is Esopus Spitzenburg, bright red, with sky-high levels of sugar balanced by floral acidity. But its limbs grow chaotically, shading out the branches below, and it often produces "blind" wood, with no buds.

Another Dark Day in the History of the Blood Reserve
by Mike Bruised Head ( Ninna Piiksii Chief Bird)
St Paul's School/Blood Reserve
This morning which is Sunday October 2, 2011, I woke up with the same sad feeling I had yesterday when a relative of mine was instructed by his boss for us to take our rented tent down and for all of us to clear out or he would call the police on me and all of the other people. Saturday was set-aside for a prayer day and drumming for the safety of all human beings in southern Alberta and in Alberta. The name for the day that the planning group came up with was "Drumming for the Earth Gathering". People from the Blood Reserve who were coming out were elders from all the different districts and communities on the Blood Reserve. There were going to be people from all of the different sacred societies coming out to pray. Also, coming out were drum groups to perform during the day and to all go home peacefully by 4 pm. People who have been having bad dreams since the fall of 2010 were also going to come out and tell their story and offer tobacco the earth.
What was most disappointing is that I received in good faith from the Blood Tribe Chief his approval and to honor his request for the elders to pray for the people [...]
